Revered wood carver Motoharu Asaka reveals the secrets of his craft and why it is so important to keep this dying tradition alive. Many Japanese images that we are familiar with all over the world originally stemmed from this great art. After years spent learning the techniques of wood carving, Motoharu set about learning the printing process in a bid to protect his passion.

Once apprentice to a master, he himself is now a sensé, teaching those who work with him and travelling the world to promote his labour of love. His work has grown in popularity after working alongside world famous tattoo artist Horiyoshi III, he now hopes to bring this ancient tradition to a new generation.
